In order to use the Reggie! Level Editor, you will need a copy of the game's /Stage folder, which contains all the original levels and tilesets the editor will use. There are several ways to obtain the game's files, which is listed below. It is recommended to dump all the files from the disc, because you might need them in the future.

From Wii Disc

These methods are fully legal, because they require you to own the game disc. You will also need a homebrew-enabled Wii. You can find an excellent guide for enabling homebrew here.

Reggie! Dumper is a small homebrew app which allows you to dump New Super Mario Bros. Wii's files.

Requirements

  • SD Card (possibly not SDHC) or USB drive with at least 20 MB of free space (for the /Stage folder only) or 450 MB (to dump the whole disc)
  • Reggie! Dumper
  • Original Wii Remote connected (not the Wii Remote Plus with the Motion Plus built in), so that the Wii Remote doesn't turn off while starting Reggie! Dumper

Steps

Download Reggie! Dumper and extract the .zip file on the root of the SD card or USB drive. Overwrite if necessary. The apps folder should look like this:

Turn the Wii on and insert the New Super Mario Bros. Wii disc. After that, open the Homebrew Channel and load Reggie! Dumper. You will be welcomed by this screen:

If you only want to get the files needed for Reggie, press (A) on the Wii Remote. To get the entire content of the disc, press [B] on the Wii Remote. Let the app do its job, and when it finishes, press the (HOME) button on the Wii Remote to go back to the Homebrew Channel:

Now, insert the SD card or USB drive back into your computer. You will find a folder named reggie, with the dumped files inside:

WiiXplorer is a file explorer application for the Wii. Along with its countless features, it allows copying files from Wii game discs, which is the scope of this guide.

Requirements

  • SD card (possibly not SDHC) or USB drive with at least 20 MB of free space (for the /Stage folder only) or 450 MB (to dump the whole disc)
  • WiiXplorer

Steps

Download WiiXplorer and extract the .zip file on the root of the SD card or USB drive. Overwrite if necessary. The apps folder should look like this:

Turn the Wii on and insert the New Super Mario Bros. Wii disc. After that, open the Homebrew Channel and start WiiXplorer. You will be welcomed by this screen:

Now click on the SD symbol on the top left corner, then choose DVD. Pay attention not to switch back and forth between these 2 too quickly, or the app will crash:

After the disc is loaded, click on any folder to make the disc's directories appear. You will see 2 folders, named respectively 0 Update and 1 Data. The first contains the update for Wii System Menu 4.2, while the second contains the actual game files:

You now have 2 options:

  • If you want to get the /Stage folder only, go to 1 Data --> Files. Once you find the /Stage folder, hover the pointer over it, press (+) on the Wii Remote and choose Copy. Then switch back to the SD card or USB drive, press (+) on the Wii Remote and choose Paste.
  • If you want to get the entire disc, do the same as above, but copy the entire 1 Data folder instead.
After the operation is complete, press the (HOME) button on the Wii Remote to exit the app or turn off the Wii. Insert the SD card or USB drive back into your computer to access the dumped files. You can then proceed to the next tutorial to continue preparing your setup.

From ISO/WBFS

If you have access to either an .iso or a .wbfs dump of the game, there are 3 other methods which can be used to extract the game's files. Sailing the high seas and pirating the game by downloading it for free online is not recommended as it's illegal. You will not find any download link for the game on this site, so it would be best to obtain a physical disc and dump the image with a homebrew-enabled Wii.

An easy (and usually unnoticed) way to extract any Wii game disc is to use Dolphin Emulator's filesystem feature.

Requirements

Steps

Install Dolphin Emulator and open it. Once it's opened, add the folder your .iso or .wbfs file is in. Right-click on the game and click Properties:

In the window that opens, click on the Filesystem tab:

Once there, right-click on Partition 0 (or Partition 1 if there are multiple ones) and click Extract All Files..., or you can manually find the /Stage folder by looking in the directories and extract it individually. Optionally, you can extract the game's executable by clicking on Extract DOL... (only needed in the stable build):

Now choose a folder where to extract the disc, and let the extraction complete. You can then proceed to the next tutorial to continue preparing your setup.
Wii Backup Fusion is a user-friendly version of Wiimm's ISO Tools, a fully-fledged .iso or .wbfs manager. It's also the fastest tool in terms of extraction time, so it's really recommended to use it.

Requirements

Steps

Download Wii Backup Fusion, extract the .zip file (for Windows or macOS) or .tar.bz2 file (for Linux), or open the .deb file (if you're on Debian Linux) wherever you want and start the program. After that, click the Load button on the bottom-left corner of the window:

Now browse to the folder where the .iso file is. Once the program finishes scanning it, select the game, and then click on Extract Image:

In the window that appears, click Open and choose a folder for the files to be extracted in. Once you are ready, press OK to start the extraction:

Once the extraction is done, proceed to the next tutorial to continue preparing your setup.
WIIScrubber is an old and unmaintained .iso manager tool, exclusively for Windows PCs. It is recommended to use other methods for extracting the game's files.

Requirements

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii raw .iso file (it's around 4.37 GB in size)
  • WIIScrubber

Steps

Download WIIScrubber, extract the .zip file wherever you want and start the program. Once it's opened, click on Load ISO and choose the .iso file:

After it loads, right-click on the partition named DATA (which is usually Partition 1), then click Unencrypted Partition --> Extract:

Choose the destination folder and wait for the extraction to finish (it may take some time). When it ends, you can close WIIScrubber (if it prompts Are you sure you want to exit?, click Yes). Proceed to the next tutorial to continue preparing your setup.
